AI tools clearly explained

ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? The honest comparison.

Three big AI chats, three subscriptions around 20 euros – and the question everyone asks: which one is worth it for me? Here you get the comparison without fan goggles: what sets the tools apart, what is free, what the paid tiers cost and how to reach your decision in four steps.

  • Explained for beginners
  • All three compared head-to-head
  • Honest assessment
  • As of September 2026

The basics

Three strong tools, three characters

The most important news first: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all three excellent AI chats. Each of the tools writes and understands good German, each answers everyday questions, drafts texts and reliably explains complicated topics.

The differences therefore lie not in “good versus bad” but in the character of the tools and the ecosystem behind them: How does working together feel? How does the tool handle long documents? And how well does it fit the programs you work with every day anyway? Exactly these questions decide which of the three suits you.

That takes the pressure out of the decision: you cannot go wrong with any of the three. It is not about finding the objectively best tool – there is no such thing – but the one that fits into your everyday routine most naturally.

The decision aid

Which tool for whom?

Looking for an all-round start?

Then ChatGPT is the obvious choice: the best-known AI chat with the largest feature ecosystem – from text drafts to image generation, it offers the most under one roof.

Long documents & careful texts?

Then Claude is worth it: the tool shines with long documents, thoroughly worded texts and programming – the careful worker among the three.

You live in the Google world?

If you spend your day in Gmail, Docs and on an Android phone, go for Gemini: no other tool is so tightly interwoven with the Google world.

Your team works in Microsoft Office?

Then – to be honest – none of the three is the first choice, but rather Microsoft Copilot: AI right inside Word, Excel and Outlook.

Research with sources?

If verifiable answers with source citations are what matters most to you, take a look at our guide to Perplexity – that is what it is built for.

Still undecided?

No problem: all three can be used for free. Simply test them in parallel with real tasks – after one to two weeks you will know more than from any comparison.

There is no “best” AI tool – there is the right one for your everyday work. Every detail on the individual tools is in our dedicated guides to ChatGPT, Claude and Google Gemini.

The most important question

What is free – and what do the subscriptions cost?

01 — All three can be used for free

Testing costs nothing

For getting started and for an honest comparison you do not need a single subscription – each of the three tools has a usable free tier:

  • ChatGPT: free with a current standard model, uploads & images tightly limited
  • Claude: free with Sonnet, limit per rolling 5-hour window
  • Gemini: free with the Flash model, all you need is a Google account
  • All three: good German in the free version
  • Our recommendation: test in parallel for one to two weeks
02 — The paid tiers at a glance

Similar prices, different focus

In terms of price, the three are close together – the differences lie in what you get for your money:

  • ChatGPT Plus: around 20 $/month – higher limits, stronger reasoning models
  • Claude Pro: around 20 $/month (about 17 $ with annual billing) – 5x usage, Opus & Claude Code
  • Google AI Pro: around 22 €/month – full Pro model, Deep Research, more storage
  • Google alternative: cheaper Plus tier for about 5 €/month
  • All three providers: even more expensive professional tiers above that

Our recommendation: only pay once you hit limits in everyday use – and then for the tool you got stuck with. Prices and limits change constantly – the current details on the providers' websites are what counts (this page reflects September 2026).

The path to your choice

Four steps to your decision.

  1. Create all three accounts

Create a free account with each of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It takes a few minutes and commits you to nothing.

  2. Pick a real task

Complete a real weekly task – a quote, an email, a summary – in all three tools. Important: the same task, otherwise you are comparing apples with oranges.

  3. Watch for three things

Compare the tone of the answers, the thoroughness – and how well the tool connects to your programs. In everyday use, the ecosystem often decides more than the answer itself.

  4. Commit to one tool

Choose ONE tool and get really good at it. Constant tool-hopping costs you more time and nerves than any subscription – routine beats variety.

A note on privacy: do not enter personal customer data or trade secrets into freely worded free chats – that applies equally to all three tools. When in doubt: anonymize first, then ask.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the comparison.

Which AI tool is the best – ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

None of them – and that is the honest answer. All three are excellent AI chats; the differences lie in their character and ecosystem, not in “good versus bad”. As a rule of thumb: ChatGPT for the all-round start with the largest feature ecosystem, Claude for long documents, careful texts and programming, Gemini for anyone who lives in Gmail, Docs and Android anyway.

Can I use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for free?

Yes, all three. ChatGPT can be used for free with a current standard model, though uploads and image features are tightly limited. Claude can be used for free with the Sonnet model, with a limit per rolling 5-hour window. Gemini can be used for free with the Flash model – all you need is a Google account. For serious testing, that is more than enough with all three.

How much do ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro cost?

ChatGPT Plus costs around 20 US dollars per month, Claude Pro also around 20 US dollars (about 17 US dollars per month with annual billing), Google AI Pro around 22 euros per month – Google additionally offers a cheaper Plus tier for about 5 euros. All three providers also have more expensive professional tiers above that. As of September 2026; the current details on the providers' websites are what counts.

Which AI tool is best for German?

Good news here: all three write and understand very good German. Language quality is no longer a criterion you need to base your decision on – choose by character and ecosystem instead.

Should I have several AI subscriptions at the same time?

For most people: no. For testing, you may and should use all three for free in parallel. Paying, however, usually only makes sense for the one tool you work with every day – anyone who constantly jumps between tools never gets really good at any of them. That tool-hopping ends up costing you more than any subscription.
