SEO for AI search: How your website shows up in AI answers.
More and more customers no longer ask Google for ten blue links – they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or the AI Overview directly for an answer. Whoever is cited as a source there gets the customer; whoever is missing does not exist for that search. The discipline behind it is called GEO, generative engine optimization. The good news: it does not contradict classic SEO – it builds on it.
- GEO without buzzwords
- Concrete measures
- Builds on classic SEO

What AI search does differently.
A classic search engine shows a list of websites – the user clicks and reads for themselves. An AI search reads on their behalf: it pulls content from several sources, formulates an answer and, at best, cites the sources. What matters is no longer who ranks third, but whose content the AI understands, trusts and can quote.
The systems also feed differently: Google’s AI Overviews from the Google index, ChatGPT search substantially from the Bing index, Perplexity from its own crawling. If you want to appear everywhere, you have to be readable for all of them.
The measures that actually count.
- Answer questions directly: content that answers a concrete question clearly in the first sentences gets cited preferentially – FAQ sections are ideal for this
- Clear structure: clean headings, short paragraphs, lists – what a human skims easily, a machine extracts easily
- Structured data: Schema.org markup for businesses, FAQs and articles turns text into machine-readable facts
- Verifiable statements: concrete numbers, names and traceable details get adopted sooner than marketing phrases
- Consistent business data: name, location and services identical everywhere – on the website, on Google, in directories
- Do not forget Bing: if you want to appear in ChatGPT search, register with Bing Webmaster Tools
And the basics remain the basics: fast loading, clean technology and content that genuinely covers its topic. AI search rewards the same quality as Google – only more consistently.
How to check where you stand.
The simplest test takes five minutes: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity what your customers would ask – “web designer in [your region]”, “who does [your service] in [your town]?”. Do you appear? Are competitors named? Are the details about your business correct?
Wrong or missing mentions are almost always a symptom of the same causes: thin content, missing structure, inconsistent business data. That is exactly where GEO starts – how Southframe approaches it is on the SEO & GEO page.
Frequently asked questions.
Does GEO replace classic SEO?
No – it builds on it. Without clean technology, structure and good content, there are neither rankings nor AI citations. GEO specifically adds what AI systems additionally need: directly answered questions, structured data, consistent facts.
Can I guarantee that ChatGPT recommends my business?
No, and nobody seriously can. The systems change constantly and nobody controls their choice of sources. What you can control: making your own content so clear, structured and verifiable that it is quotable.
How do I see whether AI search brings me visitors?
In your statistics, such visits partly appear as referrals from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, but much stays invisible because the answer is read inside the AI. That is why the regular self-test counts: ask what your customers would ask.
Is GEO worth it for a small regional business?
Especially there. For questions like “who does X in Y?”, AI search draws on few, clearly recognisable regional sources – a well-maintained Google Business Profile, consistent data and a clear website are often enough to appear.
