AI tools clearly explained
Canva: Design without a designer – with AI on board.
Canva is the design tool for everyone who is not a designer: ready-made templates for social posts, flyers, presentations and more, operated via drag & drop in the browser – and with "Magic Studio" a whole AI workshop is now built in. Here you will learn what the tool can do, what is free and when Canva Pro is worth it.

The basics
What is Canva?
Canva is a design tool that works without any prior knowledge: you pick a ready-made template – for a social media post, a flyer, a presentation or a logo –, swap texts, colors and images via drag & drop and download the result. Done.
That is exactly where its success lies: what used to require a graphics program and weeks of training, Canva handles in the browser or in the app – with hundreds of thousands of templates for just about every occasion. You can use it directly on canva.com, with no installation at all.
On top of that comes "Magic Studio", Canva's AI workshop: it generates texts, creates images, removes backgrounds and automatically reformats a finished design for other channels – an Instagram post becomes a story or a flyer draft within seconds. For beginners this may be the most tangible time-saver in the whole tool.
Typical use cases
What is Canva best suited for?
Social media posts with a consistent look
Set a template to your own colors once – and every post looks like it came from one mold. That builds recognition without a graphics department.
Flyers, business cards & print material
From the notice board to the business card: print-ready templates that can be adapted in minutes – without you ever having to hear about bleed or CMYK.
Presentations that do not look like the default
Slide templates that visibly outshine the usual default design – and can be presented straight in the browser or exported as PowerPoint.
Simple logos & brand kits
For a start: a decent logo from templates, plus a brand kit with your colors and fonts that every new design draws on automatically.
Short videos & animations for social
Animated posts, stories and short clips come from the same templates – one click, and the static design turns into moving images.
Speeding up drafts with AI
Magic Studio writes rough drafts, creates images and automatically reformats finished designs for other channels – one draft becomes many.
One thing should be clear: Canva replaces neither a corporate design nor a well-thought-out website. Templates remain templates – and if everything you publish looks like Canva, you look like everyone else. The most important question
What is free – and what does paying get you?
Designing without spending a cent
The free version can be used permanently – for getting started and for occasional designs it is often completely sufficient:
- Hundreds of thousands of templates, photos and graphic elements
- Around 5 GB of cloud storage for your designs
- 1 brand kit for your colors and fonts
- AI features tightly limited (roughly 20 uses of the AI tools)
- But: much of the premium material is locked or carries a watermark
More material, full AI
Canva Pro costs around 12 €/month (or roughly 110 €/year) and comes with a free 30-day trial – it is worth it as soon as design becomes a regular task:
- Over 100 million premium photos, templates and elements
- Around 100 GB of storage, several brand kits
- Magic Studio in full (roughly 200 premium AI uses/month)
- Background removal, transparent PNGs, automatic resizing for every channel
- For collaboration in a team there is a dedicated Teams plan
Our recommendation for beginners: start for free and spend two weeks designing everything that is due anyway. If watermarks, locked templates or the AI limit get in your way, Pro is the logical next step – the 30-day trial makes the decision easy. Prices and limits change constantly; the current details on canva.com are the ones that count (this page reflects October 2026).
Getting started
Four steps to a usable design.
-
Start with a template, not a blank canvas
The blank canvas is the fastest route to bad design. Look for a template that already comes close to your goal – adapting is faster than inventing.
-
Switch to YOUR colors and fonts
Set up a brand kit with your colors and fonts – and apply it to every template. Only then do your designs look like you, not like Canva.
-
Less is more: one message per design
The most common beginner mistake is overloading. Cut until one message remains – a design that says everything ends up saying nothing.
-
Check export formats per channel
Print needs different material than the web: before exporting, check whether format and resolution fit the channel – a flyer made from the Instagram file takes its revenge in print.
A note on rights: templates and assets are subject to Canva's license terms – commercial use of your own designs is usually permitted, reselling templates is not. And for AI-generated images the usual rule applies: no brands and no real people without the necessary rights.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about Canva.
Is Canva free?
Yes, permanently. The free version offers hundreds of thousands of templates and assets, around 5 GB of storage and one brand kit. The AI features are tightly limited (roughly 20 uses of the AI tools), and much of the premium material is locked or watermarked. For getting started, that is often enough anyway.
How much does Canva Pro cost?
Around 12 euros per month or roughly 110 euros per year (as of October 2026), with a free 30-day trial. In return you get over 100 million premium assets, around 100 GB of storage, several brand kits, Magic Studio in full (roughly 200 premium AI uses per month), background removal, transparent PNGs and automatic resizing for every channel. For collaboration there is a Teams plan. The current prices at Canva are the ones that count.
What can the Canva AI (Magic Studio) do?
Magic Studio bundles Canva's AI features: generating texts, creating images, removing backgrounds and automatically reformatting designs into other formats. In the free version the AI tools are tightly limited (roughly 20 uses); in Pro, roughly 200 premium AI uses per month are available.
Is Canva enough for my company logo?
For a start: yes. With the templates, a simple, decent logo takes shape in no time. For a distinguishable brand, however, Canva reaches its limits – a great many people use the same templates, and a logo that looks like a template remains interchangeable. If you want to stand out, there is no way around an independent design.
May I use Canva designs commercially?
In principle, yes – commercial use of your own designs is usually permitted. Templates and assets, however, are subject to Canva's license terms: reselling templates, for example, is not allowed. When in doubt, check the current terms directly with the provider; we cannot give any guarantees here.
