AI tools clearly explained

NotebookLM: The AI that works only with your documents.

NotebookLM is Google's research and note-taking AI with one decisive difference to ChatGPT & Co.: it answers only based on the sources you upload yourself – and backs up every answer with citation references. Here you will learn what the tool can do, what it is good for in everyday business, what is free and when a paid subscription is worth it.

The basics

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google's research and note-taking AI: you create a notebook, upload your own sources – PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos or audio files – and ask questions. The AI answers exclusively based on these sources, with citation references to the passage in the document.

That is exactly the decisive difference to ChatGPT & Co.: while an open-ended AI chat draws on its entire training and sometimes makes things up, NotebookLM sticks to your documents – which drastically reduces the hallucination problem. The tool can be used directly in the browser at notebooklm.google.com, a Google account is all it takes.

On top come features that make more out of your documents: audio overviews, in which two AI voices discuss your documents like in a podcast, summaries at the push of a button, and flashcards and FAQ generated straight from your own content.

Typical use cases

What is NotebookLM best suited for?

Questioning long documents

Upload contracts, studies or meeting minutes and ask targeted questions instead of reading everything – every answer with a reference to the source passage.

Summarizing proposals & project documents

Pull the essentials out of extensive project and proposal documents in minutes – as an overview for you or your clients.

Generating FAQ & training material

Have FAQ, flashcards or training documents generated from your own content – based on what is actually in your documents.

Structuring market & competitor material

Collect competitors' reports, brochures and web pages and let the AI organize, compare and summarize them.

Audio overviews for on the go

Two AI voices discuss your documents like in a podcast – ideal for easing into a topic on the drive to an appointment.

Building a knowledge base for the team

Bundle processes, product information and internal knowledge in notebooks – and new employees ask the AI instead of their colleagues.

One thing should be clear: NotebookLM only knows what you give it. For open questions and up-to-date research, Perplexity or ChatGPT are the complement – and the quality of the answers stands and falls with the quality of your sources.

The most important question

What is free – and what does paying get you?

01 — The free version

Generous for everyday use

With a Google account you can use NotebookLM permanently for free – and the limits are pleasantly generous:

  • Around 100 notebooks
  • Up to about 50 sources per notebook (each up to about 500,000 words or 200 MB)
  • About 50 chat requests per day
  • About 3 audio overviews per day
  • Summaries, flashcards and FAQ generation included
02 — What the subscriptions add

Higher limits through Google AI

You do not pay for NotebookLM alone, but through the Google AI subscriptions – the same ones as for Gemini:

  • Google AI Plus (about 5 €/month): roughly doubles the limits
  • Google AI Pro (about 22 €/month): considerably more notebooks, sources and daily requests
  • One subscription covers NotebookLM and Gemini together

Our recommendation for beginners: start for free – the free version goes surprisingly far. Only once you hit the chat or audio limits daily is it worth looking at the subscriptions. Prices and limits change constantly – the current details on notebooklm.google.com are the ones that count (this page reflects October 2026).

Getting started

Four steps to your own knowledge base.

  1. Create a notebook and upload documents

Create a notebook on notebooklm.google.com and upload 3–5 real documents – material you work with anyway.

  2. Ask concrete questions

Ask specifically about deadlines, figures or connections – and follow the citation references to verify the answers in the original.

  3. Try an audio overview

Have an audio overview generated – two AI voices discuss your documents. Surprisingly good for easing into a topic.

  4. One notebook per topic

Keep topics cleanly separated: one notebook per project, client or field of knowledge – not everything in one. That keeps the answers precise.

A note on data protection: uploaded sources are stored with Google. Confidential documents belong in the tool only with the right account setup (Workspace or business account) and internal approval – and particularly sensitive documents do not belong in any third-party cloud tool. More on this in our guide AI and data privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about NotebookLM.

What is NotebookLM and how is it different from ChatGPT?

NotebookLM is Google's research and note-taking AI. The decisive difference: you upload your own sources – PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos or audio files – and the AI answers exclusively based on these sources, with citation references to the passage in the document. ChatGPT & Co., by contrast, draw on their general training and can phrase things freely; NotebookLM sticks to your documents.

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes, permanently – all you need is a Google account. The limits are generous: around 100 notebooks, up to about 50 sources per notebook, plus daily limits for chats (about 50 per day) and audio overviews (about 3 per day). Higher limits are available through the Google AI subscriptions; the current details at Google are the ones that count.

Which sources can I upload?

PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos and audio files – up to about 500,000 words or 200 MB per source (as of October 2026). Up to about 50 sources are possible per notebook. Which formats are currently supported can be found directly at Google.

What are audio overviews?

Two AI voices discuss your uploaded documents like in a podcast – surprisingly natural and well suited for easing into a topic on the go. In the free version, about 3 audio overviews per day are possible.

Does NotebookLM hallucinate?

Considerably less than open-ended AI chats: because NotebookLM answers only based on your sources and backs up statements with citation references, the hallucination problem is drastically reduced. That is not a guarantee – verify important statements via the references in the original. Checking remains mandatory.
